About American Crosscurrents

American Crosscurrents explores the people, movements, ideas, organizations, and cultures that shape American life. Each subject is presented as fairly and constructively as possible—on its own terms, in the context of its history, and with attention to what its participants value, believe, and hope to accomplish. The goal is understanding rather than caricature, whether or not a visitor ultimately agrees with the subject being presented.

Understanding also requires knowing what critics and opponents have said. For that reason, the site includes a Critics section as an educational resource. These perspectives are not presented as the final word, nor does their inclusion imply endorsement. They are provided because anyone studying—or participating in—a movement or organization benefits from understanding the arguments made against it.

American Crosscurrents invites visitors to consider both self-understanding and outside criticism, examine the evidence, and reach their own informed conclusions.
